While we may all be different, depression in men does not differentiate one man from another. And depression in men tends not to be some ethereal, mystical weakness that men can simply "think more positively" and it will go away.

Depression is often physical and genetic in its origins. Depression is largely created by how your brain has developed. Somewhere down your ancestorial line, you had a family member who was challenged with depression. A mother or father, grandmother or grandfather, etc.

Think of therapy for men this way. When the body experiences an injury or major surgery, often physical therapy is needed. Physical therapy restores the body to healthy functioning.

Depression originates in a physical organ in the body: the brain. Sometimes, we need physical therapy for the mind in the form of depression therapy for men.

Those men who start counseling for men for depression and put in the time and effort often overcome depression. We see it happen time and time again. And you are no different than the other men who succeed. You can too.

Katy Counseling for Men: Our Approach to Depression Counseling

At Katy Counseling for Men, we use those counseling approaches that are supported by research. These counseling approaches for men have been shown to be effective and often in the least amount of time.

Our goal is to help you overcome the obstacle in your path to a stronger future. Happiness, fulfillment, career progression, stronger relationships, increased intimacy -- this is possible. And we are committed and dedicated in helping you get there.

Some of the counseling approaches we use are:

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavior Therapy, or CBT, is one of the tried-and-true approaches in counseling men for depression. It is a gold standard in treating depression for men.

CBT was first developed in the 1960's. As a result, CBT is one of the most researched and studied approaches to help, not only with depression, but with anxiety, social anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, PTSD, imposter syndrome, performance anxiety and more.

CBT is talk therapy that explores the following:

  • A person's core belief

  • How that belief may lead to automatic thoughts

  • And how these thoughts may lead to depression

It explores the above chain of events and ways to change the core belief, automatic thoughts, and the feelings or emotions.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

Accelerated Resolution Therapy, or ART therapy, is a type of therapy that combines several research supported and effective therapy approaches. The combination of these approaches produces a counseling approach for men that has shown improvements in as few as 1-5 sessions.

ART is not therapy in the traditional sense. ART uses techniques such as rapid eye movement and image rescripting. ART works with the unconscious mind to process information and emotions in the brain through healthy, brain networks. This approach has been shown to help men recover from depression and other emotional challenges.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing, or EMDR, was first developed in the 1980's. It was originally developed for trauma therapy and PTSD treatment. It was used with great success for veterans returning from combat. It has also been highly successful for men who have experience emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse.

EMDR is an effective approach for any life event that may have overwhelmed a man's cognitive and/or emotional system and ability to cope. EMDR has been shown to help with depression as well as anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, performance anxiety, imposter syndrome, etc.

ART was born out of EMDR. EMDR identifies the target of the depression (or trauma, anxiety, etc.), identifies the image, explores the negative core belief, finds a positive core belief, the feelings and where you feel these feelings in your body.

Through eye movements, we work with the unconscious part of the brain to process information and/or emotions through an adaptive brain network, much like ART.

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is an effective approach in helping men overcome depression. Neurofeedback is not talk therapy. It is not EMDR or ART.

Neurofeedback works directly to train the brain and how the brain communicates which produces the emotion of depression in men. Neurofeedback will record the brains communication, compare it to a data base of other brain maps of men without depression, and through sophisticated software, we train the brain to perform without depression.

The training is very non-invasive. it often involves watching a show. When your brain is performing like a non-depressed brain, you get to hear and see the show.

When your brain is performing like it has been, with depression, the sound and picture fade or may disappear altogether. Once your brain starts performing again like the non-depressed brain, you get to hear and see the sound and picture again.

Through this pattern of back and forth reinforcement, your brain starts to identify the pattern and shift towards performing according to the pattern. The average number of sessions that neurofeedback takes to be effective is right around 40 sessions.

And neurofeedback has been approximately 90% - 95% effective. It may not work for everyone. But it has worked for many men who use neurofeedback to help overcome depression.

Men often don't start therapy for men due to time. Men are working hard to progress, provide, and propel their lives forward.

And attending counseling for men is much like exercise. Men may not exercise for the same reason -- time. But when they MAKE time for exercise, our ability to progress, provide, and propel improve greatly.
